It’s their good karma: Helping those in need
Difficult times call for people to come together to find solutions. And that’s what the volunteers of Karma Group did, by joining hands to donate food, medicines, masks, sanitisers, oxygen cylinders, and concentrators to those who lost their livelihoods in the pandemic.
Founded by IPS officer HGS Dhaliwal, last year, this group consists of volunteers from across India and abroad. Seeing people struggle relentlessly for basic necessities had compelled him to focus on finding and helping out the needy in the interiors. “Most people come to the main road, distribute and go. But the needy, who are down with fever, are not able to come and collect. Our volunteers go to deep interiors,” says Dhaliwal, adding, “The idea is to pool resources. We have doctors from UK, US, and Australia who are providing free telemedicine and consultation.”
Elaborating on the group’s operations, he says, “The most important thing is last mile connectivity, which many can’t achieve right now.
Recently, we had a drive in the Yamuna Khadar area, and distributed food packets (including oil, masala, biscuits, dal, milk powder), sanitary pads and masks, which could sustain a family of five for a week.”
Presently, the group is associated with several gurdwaras and trusts to facilitate help and conduct drives in the Capital, as well as send relief material to other states.
Chandrajeet Kumar Gupta, a 23-year-old student from Delhi who has worked closely with the group, says, “We’ve procured rations for 500 families, and distributed to Yamuna Khadar Jhuggi Camp, Okhla Jhuggi Camp, Afghani Colony Refugees camp, and sex workers. The volunteers ensure that help reaches every one in need.”
