The Reattaching to work in morning makes leaders more successful: Study

-

Anew study has found that on days when leaders and managers are able to reattach to work in the morning, they see higher focus and positivity, allowing them to be more successful during the day.

Getting into the right mindset for work can set the tone for the rest of your day, and is a beneficial practice for managers, noted the study conducted at Portland State University, USA. Mentally reconnecting to work, that is, thinking about what you want to accomplish, what’s on the day’s agenda, what situations you might encounter, before you even open your work email, better prepares an employee to be engaged throughout the day.

Reattachment to work can occur at home (thinking about the day at breakfast), during the commute (anticipating events at work that day) or when arriving at work (mentally running through the day’s to-do list after parking). For those who are working from home, the time saved by not commuting can be used to sit in front of the computer and mentally get into a work mindset, before opening your email or logging in for a virtual meeting.

By successfully reattaching to work at the start of their day, managers were able to accomplish their tasks better, felt energetic and engaged in transformational leadership behaviours. “Such behaviour is crucial for a variety of employee outcomes,” said Charlotte Fritz, lead author.

Over 400 leaders filled out daily surveys throughout the work week, and Fritz said their levels of vitality, goal accomplishment and positive leadership fluctuated based on how they mentally reconnected with work in the morning, adding, “On days when leaders do this, they’re going to do better at work.”
