On Vegetarian Day, take the healthy road to a plant-based diet
swati.chaturvedi@hindustantimes.com dopting plant-based diets can have reasons aplenty, be it health, ethics, or environment. On World Vegetarian Day, today, celebs share their reasons to shun meat.
AROHINA, LIFESTYLE INFLUENCER AND FOUNDER, AA LIVING
Growing up in a
Punjabi family, I ate meat with every meal. My turning point was when I was nine years old in Switzerland and it dawned upon me that I was actually eating an animal (pork), which had been slaughtered and not just brought from the market. Although my journey started young, I took a step forward to being mostly vegan during the pandemic as I had time to watch documentaries such as Cowspiracy, and Earthlings. I realised the truth behind dairy industry. I feel light, active and content with my decision.
SHWETTA PARASHAR, ACTOR
I was a hardcore non-vegetarian. There would not be one day without prawns, fish. One day I was sitting with my Golden Retriever, Apple, who I consider to be my son. He greeted me whenever I came home. One fine day, he came to greet me, and I saw something in his eyes which changed me. In that moment I decided I’m going to turn vegetarian as I cannot hurt animals. Then I also started a Facebook page, Stand Up for Your Dog, as I believe animals deserve their respect. It’s been a year and a half since I turned vegetarian, I feel lighter, and have become happier.
RINA DHAKA, FASHION DESIGNER
Some 15 years ago, I quit eating meat. I could not bear to see animals in pain and that’s why I decided to become a vegetarian. I feel that this has improved my health in certain ways. Ever since I gave up meat, I get up in the morning feeling lighter and fresher and more energetic. My digestion has also improved considerably with the increased take of green veggies and fruits. I hardly get constipated now. My daily diet includes a lot of antioxidants, fibre and micronutrients. I am happy with the choice I made.
