Minimum movement, doors and windows shut, monitoring air quality via various Air Quality Index (AQI) apps — denizens are already fretting about air pollution. On Saturday, Delhi’s AQI crossed the 300 mark, and is expected to be “poor” in the coming months. In light of bad air days, some residents of Delhi-NCR share their plan of action to tackle the smog menace.

Steam and indoor plants to the rescue

From making dietary changes to incorporating breathing exercises in their daily routine, city folks are doing it all, and well ahead of the expected peak in AQI! Delhiite Gayatri Manchanda says, “I’m going to start doing deep breathing exercises for 30 minutes in the morning, regular steaming and keep snake plants, aloe vera, etc. at home. I am even going to get a nebuliser. The air seems bearable so far, but I wonder if the new smog tower is helping in any way!”

Return of the AQI app

Businessman Mohit Chauhan is all set to reinstall the AQI app. “I had deleted it when my phone memory got full. Now, I’m going to make space and re-download it, so that I can plan my outdoor and indoor workout accordingly. I also intend to utilise my piled-up leaves and head to a non-crowded clear air place, up North. And, our air purifier is running full throttle!” says this Gurugrammer.

I’m all for using air filters and regular steaming. I don’t want to fall sick because of bad air. SUPRIYA MAULICK, Lawyer based in Delhi

Dehumidifiers for an allergy attack

For those with breathing problems, the haze in the sky is a nightmare! Delhiite Ritesh Gandotra, an MNC professional who has two asthmatic members at home, says: “My mother had a mild allergy attack. Filters of air purifiers have been cleaned and kept ready. Each of our rooms has a separate air filter. Now, we have air purifying plants and a couple of

Are you wheezing, too?

Medical professionals are seeing a rise in breathing-related queries, as many complain of wheezing, dry cough, nausea, etc. Dr Nehal Shah Vora, a Gurugram-based general physician, recommends avoiding outdoor workout. Stressing on the role diet plays in curbing ill effects of pollution, she adds: “Consume lemon, guava, orange and amla. Nuts, seeds and fish (salmon) are rich in Vitamin E, and must be included in the diet, too, along with bajra and rajma. A warm drink made with jaggery, turmeric and spices is a wonderful antioxidant that improves immunity.”
