The trend of matha patti, a jewelencrusted headband, has resurfaced as a wedding must-have, thanks to celebrity brides such as Alia Bhatt, Katrina Kaif, Ankita Lokhande Jain and influencer Kritika Khurana. This time, the trend isn’t just popular among the dulhans, but her bridesmaids as well. One can style it in multiple ways. The head piece is usually worn with a bun, but one can also pair it with open hair, like Bhatt. It looks elegant and adds a lot of traditional feel. “Matha patti can be worn at the edge of the forehead or a little behind, depending on the look one wants to achieve. The bride generally wears it with the maang tika, and the bridesmaids or family members wear it like a headband,” says Gautam Gupta, fashion designer.

This trend has been an integral part of weddings since ages, believes fashion designer Rimple Narula. “If you see the history books or old archives in museums, matha patti has been an essential part of bridal dressing for centuries. Even in Mughal culture, the head ornament has always been given special importance,” says Narula, adding, “Accessorising the head holds a very important aspect in women dressing to their fullest; and matha patti not just completes the look, it gives definition to the face.”

Matha patti made with gold, silver, emeralds, Burmese rubies, yellow sapphire, uncut diamonds and Japanese cultured pearls, stands out. Kundan or polki are great if you are looking for a royal Indian look. “If you are wearing a saree, you can wear this accessory and keep a bare neckline. A white silk shirt or gown, or a black outfit with a matha patti will look fabulous as well,” concludes Narula.
