An effective way to hydrate and provide deep moisturisation to skin, slugging is ruling the skincare trends on social media. A hit among those who have dry skin, the term refers to slathering on any sort of occlusive, mostly with petroleum jelly, on the face or lips as the last step of night-time skincare routine.

Applying an excess amount of cream on the face works off cracks and dryness, prevents moisture loss and promotes skin-rejuvenation.

“As we age, our skin tends to lose its elasticity and moisture, which is responsible for keeping the skin supple and soft. Thus, it’s necessary to provide it some extra nourishment, and slugging helps in the best way. Since it is the last step in the entire skin and lip care routine, it allows other products like serums and moisturisers to work effectively,” says Dr Sonia Tekchandani, dermatologist.

Why use slugging?

“Slugging helps in locking the moisture. Besides, air conditioners can also make the skin dry and dehydrated throughout the night, which can be prevented with this technique,” says Dr Tekchandani.

Another dermatologist, Dr Ibrahim Yahya, adds, “We naturally lose about 300-400ml of water through our skin, every day. With slugging, the occlusive layer provides extra protection against water loss.”

Is petroleum jelly the best option?

A house-hold beauty staple since generations, petroleum jelly is one of the most easily procured and affordable of skincare products. “It is a non-comedogenic product that works on the skin without clogging the pores,” says Dr Yahya explaining that one needn’t be worried about the greasy look.

Word of caution

People with skin conditions such as acne or eczema should refrain from using this technique. Those using alpha-hydroxy acids (AHAs), betahydroxy acids (BHAs), or retinoids in their skincare should avoid slugging, too. “Avoid slugging if you use strong active-based serums in your skincare routine, as it can increase the absorption of the actives, which could be detrimental,” warns Dr Yahya.

And, of course, excessive slugging can be bad, too. “If overdone, it can lead to clogged pores and breakouts causing more skin trouble. It is best to consult a dermatologist before using this method,” adds Dr Tekchandani.

Do it right

Cleansing and toning should precede slugging, and it’s best to use mild products. “Load up on humectants or water-based moisture products,” says beauty expert Richa Agarwal.

“Moist and damp skin locks in the moisture. Petroleum jelly alone cannot hydrate the skin as it is only an occlusive,” Dr Yahya concludes.
