After multiple films and web shows to her credit, actor Wamiqa Gabbi has explored a new format of storytelling with her recent musical short film, Fursat, co-starring Ishaan Khatter.

She tells us, “With the growing digital market and the audience’s rising interest in watching films online, short films are the perfect choice for an artiste today. If a story that is told in just 20-30 minutes, still manages to strike a chord with the audience, then it’s an exciting thing to do.”

For the Modern Love Mumbai actor, working with Khatter turned out to be a learning experience, with some of his dancing skills rubbing off on her. In fact, she recently took to social media to share a rehearsal video of a song sequence from the short, for which she had to learn contemporary dance. Calling her co-star an “inspiration”, she says, “Ishaan is a bundle of energy. Not just that, he is very easygoing, so i felt at home shooting with him. He always has something to say or he is always curious to learn something new. His energy could rub off on you; it helped me keep my own energy levels up.”

In fact, when it comes to the dance sequences, the 83 (2021) actor says she couldn’t have asked for a better costar: “I have to confess, his dancing skills are something I would like to imbibe and learn. That is something that has stayed with me even days after working with him.”

Gabbi, who managed to complete her contemporary dance training for the film in just eight days, says it was nothing short of “artistic gratification”. She adds, “I was busy shuffling between projects and I had minimal time on hand. Learning a dance form as technical and complex as contemporary isn’t easy, but I surprised myself. And I’m grateful I could execute this and embody it. I’m grateful to an amazing team that patiently trained me. It was an artistic gratification for me to learn something so out-of-theordinary.”

If a story that’s told in just 20-30 minutes strikes a chord with the audience, then it’s an exciting thing to do for an artiste.
