‘BROWN DESERVES THIS KIND OF RECOGNITION’

Karisma Kapoor is ecstatic about her web series, Brown — headed to the Berlin International Film Festival — for more reasons than one. The actor believes the conversation around mental health, which forms the crux of the story, will get a muchneeded push with such exposure.
She tells us, “The series getting an international platform is amazing, considering the hard work that has gone into making it, on the script level or [in terms of] characters. We are super excited and humbled. This is the kind of recognition that the show deserved.”
Brown, which is a part of Berlin Market Selects 2023, tells the story of Rita Brown, a suicidal alcoholic, and Arjun Sinha, a widower riddled with survivor guilt. It touches upon the subjects of depression, addiction, corruption and false appearances. “Along with depression and addiction, the show also focuses on irrelevance, which nobody talks about. Sometimes, people become irrelevant. It’s very hard for them to not be cared for or asked about. And, it’s real. The show talks about how you deal with that… All these very relevant points and [how] we tackle it,” says Kapoor, who was last seen in the web show Mentalhood (2020).
The 48-year-old goes on to add, “The show getting an international platform means the subject will get a global stage, which means bringing [about] awareness on how we can tackle it. We are talking about things people sometimes don’t want to talk about or shy away from. And here is this woman (Rita Brown), dealing with it all. The show brings these very relevant things to the forefront.”
Kapoor also feels that her show going to Berlin will give Indian storytelling a push. “We have it in us. This is the kind of story that should be told — on what is happening in our country and how people here deal with situations,” she signs off.
