Kuno National Park brings to you a thrilling cheetah tourism experience

- Sneha Chakraborty sneha.chakraborty@hindustantimes.com

Just about two weeks ago, as many as twelve South African cheetahs were released into enclosures inside Kuno National Park at the Sheopur district of Madhya Pradesh by the Central government. With this, the total count of cheetahs is now 20. This development swept in after Prime Minister Narendra Modi announced the world’s first Cheetah Rehabilitation Project in Kuno National Park on September 17, 2022. Since then, the growing tourist attraction in the state holds no bounds.

The place is full of ancient forts and structures which are full of lush green vegetation dominated by the Kardhai, Khair and Salai trees. In the midst of this flows the famous Kuno river, from which this park derives its name. The grassland location is home to a variety of living species such as blue bull, Indian wolves, jackals, langur monkeys, chinkara, spotted deer, and leopards to name a few.

If you are planning to give this place a visit soon, we suggest you to opt for a wildlife safari tour. In this tour, you can make your way through the park’s collection of historic landmarks such as the Amet and Maitoni forts. Those who want to explore more without straying far from the location can check out Kuno Palpur, a mere five-minute drive out of town, to see the first village which was relocated from inside the park to a nearby fort named Palpur Ki Gadhi.

GETTING TO KUNO NATIONAL PARK

The best way to reach this national park is by taking a flight to the Gwalior Airport, from where you can take a cab directly to the park. If you are travelling by train, stations like Gwalior, Sawai Madhopur, Kota, Jaipur, and Jhansi offer great connectivity. Also, if you happen to be at other touristy places like Banjara Dam and Baroda Fort, then, it takes about an hour and a half to travel to the national Park.

Once you have reached the destination, you can make a reservation to stay around the park with the District Forest Officer at the Kuno Office.

BEST TIME TO VISIT

Ideally, one can give this place a quick visit either from October to March or from May to July. These months offer moderate temperatures with less precipitation in the state.
