Prints that traverse through emotional, physical realms
The art of printmaking has a distinct charm in the world of art. Showcasing the same are the artworks at the ongoing exhibition, Miles Ahead... And More To Travel. On display are works of Sushma Yadav, who traverses emotional and physical realms, between the crowds and the self, with each milestone that she accomplishes in her life.
Each etching is rife with her artistic achievements and narrates the story of humanity through the imaginative lens of a woman.
“I have a detailed and minute, almost mathematical pre-planning
that delicately synergises with the balancing and symmetry of light and dark,” says Yadav, whose mentor and guide is veteran printmaker Anupam Sud. Yadav’s learning from Sud are visible in her treatment of highlights and textures, all of which come together to cast a beautiful poetry in black and white.
Illustrating about her process of etching, Yadav shares, “Etching is a black and white medium, and I see everything in two parts. So much so that I dream also in two tones.”
Yadav’s artistic work is at an exciting juncture in the landscape of Indian printmaking.
“My big etching works, on twothree plates together, involve continually working on the plates together for extended periods of time to maintain tonal and visual
agreement,” shares Yadav, adding, “My works are symptomatic of the journey of life.”
Curated by Jyoti A Kathpalia, the exhibition is a graphic commentary, a ludic play with reality as well as a starkness of vision in the stylised interplay of light and darkness, of black and white.
