Summer’s in, serums for the win!
Rising temperatures coupled with sweat make for a tricky combination for the skin. Breakouts, rashes and acne can all increase as summer gains pace, so it only makes sense to start using lighter products in one’s beauty routine. One of these musthaves is a face serum. Explaining why its vital, Dr Nishita Ranka, medical director and founder of her skin clinic, says, “Owing to the intense heat and humidity, you need a skincare regimen that is effective and comfortable.”
WHAT’S THE RAGE ABOUT
Serums are lightweight and water-based products that are designed to seep concentrated active ingredients into the skin. “Face serums have emerged as potent elixirs. They are designed to address specific skin issues such as acne, pigmentation, fine lines, wrinkles, sun damage, dryness and dullness. Often dubbed as actives due to their high concentration of active ingredients, they are typically the first layer applied to the skin after cleansing,” says
Dr Geetika Srivastav, founder of Influennz Clinic, Delhi.
THE BENEFITS
Noting the difference between a cream and a serum, Dr Ranka, states, “During the summer, the skin tends to produce more oil, making heavy creams less appealing. This is where serums can be beneficial. They have quick absorption without leaving a greasy residue.”
Based on its ingredients, a serum can also target specific skin concerns. “A hyaluronic acid serum provides essential hydration, while a vitamin C serum can help combat free radical damage from increased sun exposure and reduce pigmentation,” she adds.
TOP OFF WITH A LIGHT MOISTURISER
While a serum is a great addition to a summer skincare routine, it need not entirely replace a face cream. “A lightweight, non-comedogenic moisturiser is necessary to seal in the moisture and active ingredients from the serum,” Dr Ranka suggests. Dr Prerna Sikka, dermatologist at Dr Karishma’s Aesthetics, Bengaluru, chimes in, “For dryer regions on the face, the skin tends to get more dehydrated in which case cream formulations at night may be preferable.”
