A bad lower back is an urban nightmare. It torments the lumbar region that bears your weight, and lowers activity levels drasticall­y. Little alteration­s to your daily routine will go a long way in keeping you pain- free.

FIVE CAUSES

A sedentary lifestyle is the biggest cause for

muscle ache in the lumbar region. Hours spent at the office on chairs that give insufficie­nt support to the back

can do equal harm. Excessive and sudden weight gain makes your back more vulnerable. Pregnancy, menstruati­on and endometrio­s is a major cause of back pain in the age group

of 25- 35. A trip or a fall, that causes a muscle

spasm. When you let work get the better of you. Anxiety tends to aggravate a

bad back.

FIVE SOLUTIONS

Step up your activity levels. As strange as it sounds, lower back pain is made worse by resting it too much.

They make a great style statement but avoid wearing heels for too long. When lifting heavy objects, always bend from your knees first.

Place an ice compress on the affected area daily.

Massage your stressed back muscles with heatinduci­ng balms.

Pick an ergonomic chair for office. Make sure the height, the tilt of the back rest and the support is ideal. Your feet should be firmly planted on the ground or on a footrest.
