Killer Buildings
The fact that the building near Dockyard Road, Mumbai, collapsed on September 27 killing 61 people, speaks mainly about negligence of Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation ( BMC ) in monitoring the safety of the building and its residents (“Built to Kill” , October 14 ). BMC needs to be very strict in observing construction regulations and quality of building materials. Tenants of building belonging to the ‘dilapidated’ category must be made to vacate the building well in time and shifted to alternative houses. They should be assured a home when building is repaired and re-developed.
RAMESH D., Bangalore The collapse of a multi-storey building in Dockyard Road should be an eyeopener for all state governments and municipalities in India. Corrupt officials and construction mafia continue to jeopardise the lives of thousands of residents in the country by constructing illegal buildings that flout safety regulations.
