Congress spokesperson Renuka Choudhary, 58, is eager to contest the Lok Sabha election from Khammam in Telangana, which she won in 2004 but lost in 2009. She describes herself as the daughter of the soil. But state Minister for Horticulture R. Venkat Reddy says she must produce “a birth certificate to prove the daughter of the soil status”. R. Damodar Reddy, an MLA and a well-known Congress party motor-mouth, wants more—an apology to the people of Telangana as “she has insulted them and the separatist state campaign in the past”. Perhaps, it will be safe for Choudhary to stay put in the Rajya Sabha until 2018.
