SIMPLY KOLKATA sets out on the fitness trail to find out how the city is keeping fit.

There’s good news for chocoholics on a strict diet. You needn’t swear off your favourite food to get fit. “When it comes to dieting, I suggest almost everything is okay to eat in moderation. If you say no to something, then the need for having it overpowers you,” says Hena Nafis, a nutritionist who runs Nutrience—a health and fitness clinic in Beckbagan. The first trick, she says, is to stop setting unrealistic expectations. “You can’t start a diet in the festive season and get dejected when you fail to follow it,” she says. The goal should be proper nutrition and fitness and not just losing weight. “Cut down on eating out. If you have to go to a party, have a healthy and balanced meal at home so that you don’t binge later,” she advices. Another advice is to follow your own body clock. “It’s good to have a heavy breakfast and an early light dinner but if you work in a call-centre or someplace with very late working hours, follow the same meal pattern of heavy breakfast and light dinner whenever you get up,” she says. Another word of caution— you cannot count on everyday food for all your nutrition needs. Often, you don’t get the kind of nutrition you need from what you eat and it maybe necessary to take supplements. “The nutrient content in vegetables or fruits simply isn’t good enough,” Nafis says. Regular health check-ups are also important.
