Speedy Justice
At the end of a speedy trial, the Shakti Mills victims finally get justice (“210 Days, 75 Witnesses, 2 Survivors”, April 7). Understandably, in the wake of the crimes, the myth of Mumbai, or for that matter any Indian city, being safe and women- friendly was busted. The devil- may- care attitude of the perpetrators, the brutal nature and the scene of the crimes mirror our cities’, and in turn our society’s, degradation. True, the Mumbai Police showed alacrity and resoluteness in the two cases, nabbing the criminals in record time. But then cities have turned into heartless metropolises that care little about its women.

Mumbai Police deserves kudos for acting fast and arresting the perpetrators of the Shakti Mills gang rape cases. It is also encouraging to see that the three culprits have been sentenced to death. Expeditious trial and the sentence are definitely going to act as deterrent against such crimes. However, apart from the legal aspects, there should also be an overall change in our mindset so that our cities and towns become safe for women.

sycophancy in BJP and the fact that it’s growing into a one- man party. But even though he will be missed, a senior leader like Jaswant Singh could have avoided making a comment that BJP is “no longer fit to govern the country”.
