Fabrics for the Season

- ABHINAV MAHAJAN Director, Maspar

It is important to take good care of your linen during the downpour, else the unholy trinity of damp smell, fungus and bacteria give rise to a range of issues. The good news is that there are several steps you can take to not only steer clear of them but to also select the latest motifs, perfect patterns and cool colours.

How to remove the damp smell from linen?

Linen placed on the shelf absorbs humidity in the air providing an environment for bacteria and mildew. Cotton is hygroscopic, it absorbs water from air and promotes growth of mould and leads to a musty smell. To remove a damp smell in the closet, one would need to reduce humidity. To beat this wipe the shelves with a mix of diluted bleach solution and diluted white vinegar. Once you have done this, keep the shelf open until its get completely dried before storing linen. Other solutions include washing or dry cleaning linen and using a linen spray on the sheets and pillows for a fresh scent.

What's trending?

For bed linen softer tones like blue and salmon are big, while for table linen grey marble and vanilla are preferred. As for motifs, the Shibori look (a Japanese manual resist dyeing technique, which produces patterns on fabric) is popular right now.

What material is perfect for monsoons?

Breathable cotton and chic silk blends are suitable for monsoons, especially when it gets humid.
