Carpet Care

- DEEPANKAR CHOUDHARY Director, Hands Carpets & Rugs

If you are one of those who feel monsoons and carpets don’t mix, think again. With some love and care you can not only increase their lifespan but also let them be the piece de

resistance all through the rains. Here are five things you should do.

1 Carpets, especially wall-to-wall carpets, need to be vacuumed regularly with cleaners that will take away not only the dirt but also the moisture that seeps into the fibre. Also, make sure that there is enough cross-ventilation in your house, as damp carpets can develop fungus if not dried quickly.

2 Avoid putting carpets in areas near the balcony or open spaces. Basically, don't put it near any area prone to water seepage.

3 Never walk on the damp part of a carpet, as it can damage the pile of the carpet.

4 Air dehumidifiers can easily be used to minimalise the moisture in the air.

5 If you decide to roll up the carpets during monsoon, you must do so in polythene sheets and put pouches of silica gel as they absorb moisture and keep things dry around them.
