THE FRENCH MADAME

1987-97

IN THIS DECADE, the designer was heavily influenced by his background in art history and we saw a lot of varied influences ranging from Greek sculpture to tantric art, the French revolution and French history. This resulted in one of Varma’s most iconic collections titled Madame Pompadour featuring Madhu Sapre and Milind Soman, the former sporting a white wig that was emblematic of French aristocracy. His woman of this decade was sexy, mysterious, steeped in history and extremely stylised (read wigs, corsets, breast plates).
