The Samajwadi Party’s cycle symbol may have taken a beating in Uttar Pradesh, but it is doing well down south. Andhra Pradesh chief minister N. Chandrababu Naidu, whose Telugu Desam Party also uses the symbol, plans to distribute 182,000 cycles to Class 9 girls in government schools, a move that will cost the state Rs 75 crore. The political returns, however, will be far greater, he reckons.
