One of the top pri­vate en­gi­neer­ing col­leges in In­dia, Birla In­sti­tute of Tech­nol­ogy (BITS) Pi­lani was founded by in­dus­tri­al­ist GD Birla in 1964. The only univer­sity in In­dia to be based on Mas­sachusetts In­sti­tute of Tech­nol­ogy (MIT) grad­ing sys­tem, it of­fers va­ri­ety of un­der­grad­u­ate, post-grad­u­ate and PHD cour­ses. “Apart from the lec­tures, there are sep­a­rate tu­to­rial classes, where a small group of nearly 40 stu­dents are taught with ex­tra de­tail. Fur­ther, there are only two ma­jor ex­am­i­na­tions; mid-se­mes­ter and end-se­mes­ter,” says Asad Hus­sain, a BE (me­chan­i­cal) stu­dent at BITS Pi­lani. On cam­pus R&D cen­tres, Cen­tre for Ma­te­rial Sci­ence and Tech­nol­ogy, Cen­tre for Re­new­able En­ergy and En­vi­ron­ment De­vel­op­ment, al­low stu­dents to de­velop, and im­ple­ment new tech­nolo­gies be­sides aca­demics.
