One of the top private engineering colleges in India, Birla Institute of Technology (BITS) Pilani was founded by industrialist GD Birla in 1964. The only university in India to be based on Massachusetts Institute of Technology (MIT) grading system, it offers variety of undergraduate, post-graduate and PHD courses. “Apart from the lectures, there are separate tutorial classes, where a small group of nearly 40 students are taught with extra detail. Further, there are only two major examinations; mid-semester and end-semester,” says Asad Hussain, a BE (mechanical) student at BITS Pilani. On campus R&D centres, Centre for Material Science and Technology, Centre for Renewable Energy and Environment Development, allow students to develop, and implement new technologies besides academics.
