One of the top private engineerin­g colleges in India, Birla Institute of Technology (BITS) Pilani was founded by industrial­ist GD Birla in 1964. The only university in India to be based on Massachuse­tts Institute of Technology (MIT) grading system, it offers variety of undergradu­ate, post-graduate and PHD courses. “Apart from the lectures, there are separate tutorial classes, where a small group of nearly 40 students are taught with extra detail. Further, there are only two major examinatio­ns; mid-semester and end-semester,” says Asad Hussain, a BE (mechanical) student at BITS Pilani. On campus R&D centres, Centre for Material Science and Technology, Centre for Renewable Energy and Environmen­t Developmen­t, allow students to develop, and implement new technologi­es besides academics.
