WATER, WATER, EVERYWHERE
In Balimukh village in flooded Assam, a pair of buffaloes are being transported to dry ground and safety. Over 100,000 people, reports say, have been displaced from over 20 villages, their homes and land submerged under overflowing rivers. Relief camps have been set up but only a fraction of those affected by the floods have sought refuge in camps, admit authorities. Floods are an annual phenomenon in Assam and critics argue that despite early warning systems and expert committees, not enough has been done to protect people and prevent damage. Kaziranga National Park too has been affected by the floods; artificial highlands have been created and additional forest guards appointed to ensure the safety of animals.
