Of­ten re­ferred to as In­dian de­sign’s best kept se­cret, Meera Ma­hade­via has, for the past 32 years been cre­at­ing some of the most in­no­va­tive, hand­crafted lux­ury hand­bags. She’s had clients rang­ing from El­iz­a­beth Hur­ley to Freida Pinto sport­ing her bags. Ma­hade­via is un­afraid of us­ing un­usual ma­te­ri­als in­clud­ing mar­ble, wooden, pre­cious and semi-pre­cious stones and sil­ver en­grav­ings on her hand­bags. Any­thing but leather, which the de­signer be­lieves is jar­ring in com­bi­na­tion with In­dian tex­tiles. Ma­hade­via who has tied up with An­thro­pol­gie, has ex­hib­ited at Ne­wark Mu­seum in New Jersey as well as the Asian Civilisation Mu­seum in Sin­ga­pore, has con­tin­ued to root her work in the In­dian aes­thetic.
