With typical Lexus discretion, the RX 450h prefers to glide under-the-radar

The superlative levels of refinement, capability and craftsmanship—singularly Japanese traits—in the Lexus RX 450 h are obscured only by this SUV’s inherent reticence to make a pomp and show about its virtues. It doesn’t scream from the exhausts, saying, ‘hey look I’m powerful’; in fact, low-speed entrances and exits, powered entirely by this hybrid’s electric heart are properly silent. Self assured? Without a doubt. But then, given Lexus’ lineage in making gratifying cars, the RX’s quiet confidence is not unwarranted.

The most befitting endorsement one could give this SUV—the pick of the trio launched by the Japanese luxury marque on it’s maiden outing in India—is that it would be a fantastic vehicle even if it wasn’t a Lexus. That requires some elaboration: with twin electric and petrol motors, that work in conjunction seamlessly delivering power, frugality, and faint levels of decibels and carbon dioxide, the RX is a poster child for the future of hybrid technology. The class-leading sound insulation cocoons the occupants in a sumptuous space of handstitched leather and soft cushions. And while the world outside honks and loses its composure, inside the RX’s parallel universe soft etudes emanate from the fantastic Mark Levinson stereo’s 15-speakers.

No one can beat the Japanese when it comes to the marrying technology and craftsmanship and that’s where the RX really becomes a Lexus. This is a large car but you can’t tell, given how well it disguises its dimensions and how easy it is to drive. It’s no slouch either, but speed junkies would do well to look elsewhere—acting puerile behind the wheel of an RX feels like a crime.
