True Style Never Shouts

This Diwali, don’t go overboard decorating. Instead, use clever tips and tricks to make your interiors sparkle

The one time one can indulge guilt-free in excesses is during festivities. Diwali being on the top the list. From food to decor, it’s natural to overdo it. As for me, I can’t stop buying candles. But I have understood that when it comes to decor, less is more. The biggest mistake homeowners make is placing too many loud decor elements. Keep it muted and not only will your rooms look great but it will bring in a sense of peace. It’s also a good idea to tell a story through the decor. Let the theme carry throughout the house.

THE BASIC INGREDIENTS

In these two settings (console and coffee table), to keep things muted, shades of white have been used as a tone-on-tone through the miniature flower arrangements and candles (there is something magical about candle light). The amber glasses with floating candles bring in a hint of colour. The basic rule to follow is to keep it symmetrical.

HEIGHTS OF DRAMA

Placing the decor pieces at different heights adds depth, as does layering in terms on texture. White cowry shells add a pious element and contrast well with the wooden furniture. Since it was a Diwali setting the Ganpati statue is the focal point. Its in a dark shade, therefore to create a white contrast, levels (of different heights) can be found around it. It also breaks the monotony. Next spread out the candles evenly and bring in colour with glasses, ceramics and lights. Remember that the furniture pieces are utility items, so a few coffee table books and plants should be placed. You can even place hurricane lanterns on the floor for a complete look. Above all, have fun while decorating.
