The Coffee Cup at Sainikpuri is the perfect place to sit back and relax with a book and a fragrant hot cuppa.

Eight years ago, when merchant navy officer, Varun Sharma, 42, moved to Secunderabad from Dehradun, he had a tough time looking for a nice yet affordable cafe serving delicious food and great coffee. And that is how he came up with the idea of opening a restaurant and named it The Coffee Cup. The name, however, is rather deceptive as the charming restaurant offers much more than coffee. This is where you can enjoy an evening of exquisite live music or standup comedy, besides an interestingly rare book you might find in their eclectic collection.

The glass walls and greenery bring things alive, standing in lovely contrast to the rugged bare-brick interiors, reminiscent of charming cafes from Goa or Manali. “Since I travel extensively, I get to see several interesting cafes in India and abroad, and I decided to bring in some of those flavours to Hyderabad,” says Sharma, showing us the vintage posters lining one of the walls and a clock that might as well belong in the Titanic era.

A go-to-place for Continental breakfast, The Coffee Cup serves a delectable variety of eggs with toast that you can pair with a thick shake or a strong brew. Add to this some cool jazz tracks and it could be the perfect note to start the day on.

Being an ardent foodie and passionate cook, Sharma enjoys picking up recipes from chefs when he sails for work. “Most items that you find on the menu are a result of this experimentation and numerous trials with friends,” he says, inviting us to sample the sizzlers, which are his personal favourite, inspired from Yoko Sizzlers in Mumbai and served on a Batman-themed platter.

The café doesn’t have any dedicated chefs and nearly everyone on the staff is trained to toss a salad or fix a burger. He is toying with the idea of introducing Indian street food such as his mother’s tikki chaat recipe from Delhi or mother-in-law’s Mumbai special bhel puri to include some Indian fusion to the menu.
