ON HOW TO BRING ALIVE THE CONCEPT OF GLOBETROTTING
1 Make your bank an ally and avoid getting blocked
A couple of days before your trip, inform the bank of your travel dates because when they notice transactions from an unknown destination, they usually block credit and debit cards.
2 Penny wise, pound foolish
Most of us think twice before shelling out the minimal travel insurance amount as we are confident that nothing is going to happen to us. If something does go wrong—from missing luggage to minor accidents, paying bills in foreign currency could turn out five times more expensive.
3 Duplicate copies of your passport and other identification papers
Carry multiple copies of your important papers. Carry one in the handbag, leave another in the luggage kept in the hotel room, and keep a copy with a friend or relative back home.
4 Pack in the essentials
Carry comfortable shoes to walk long distances during sightseeing; a scarf to protect you from the elements of nature as well as to cover your head while visiting religious institutions; a lightweight windcheater in case of unexpected rains; and sunblock to protect your skin.
5 Learn a few phrases of the local language
Technology has made it easy for us to learn languages from Swahili to German with the help of language apps. Learn some basic courtesies or important phrases such as asking for water or a toilet to help communicate with ease.
