PARDON MY FRENCH

Cine Club, Alliance Francaise Du Bengale

-

WHILE SUMMER holidays may be over, the holiday spirit is still on at the Alliance Francaise du Bengale. The institution’s Cine Club that screens French films every Wednesday will be screening classics with the theme of “summer and holidays” in July, since the month also sees the celebration of French National Day or Bastille Day.

ON THE ROSTER Check out comedies like La Loi De La Jungle (2016) by Antonin Peretjatko, Conte d'été (1995) by Eric Rohmer, Tomboy (2010) by Céline Sciamma and L'Effet Aquatique (2016) by Solveig Anspach at this festival. Rohmer’s 1995

Conte D'été or A Summer's Tale is a popular classic that was part of his four film series on four seasons. It revolves around a shy math student, Gaspard, who decides to spend his summer in a beach town called Dinard and finds himself in the unexpected situation of being wanted by three different women. Equally well regarded is Tomboy, a film revolving around 10-year-old Laure who moves to a new neighbourhood in Paris and pretends to be a boy called Mikael. This innocent film about children raises complex questions of gender and sexual identity and has received rave reviews in many LGBT film festivals.

OLD WORLD Watching a film in the newly restored turn-of-the-century Park Mansions on Park Street is a wonderful change from catching a commercial flick in your neighbourhood multiplex.
