LIVING HISTORY ý RNM Galleria

-

I

F YOU ARE TIRED OF the same old shopping options in central Kolkata, sign up for an impromptu but interesting history lesson. History books may have told you about the pioneering Bengali industrialist Sir Rajendranath Mukherjee (RNM), his son Biren and daughter-in-law “lady’ Ranu Mukherjee. But those pages would not have shown you how they lived. For that, visit RNM Galleria—Rajendranath Mukherjee's 1910 Camac Street house that has been restored by the Wellside Group. The wooden staircase and banisters, stained glass windows, central dome and skylight and the old chandelier that hangs at the atrium have all been restored to great effect. The wash basins and vanity area in the restrooms are sure to make you feel as if you got lost on the sets of Downton

Abbey. The second floor just below the beautiful stained glass lit skylight also pays homage to all the iconic buildings that RNM constructed, including the Victoria Memorial.

ROLE PLAY Looking for some more 'period fun'? Men can step into Truefitt and Hill, London’s oldest barbershop, known to have groomed the British gentry, that has opened its shop on the first floor. The building also houses Kalyan Jewellers. The Calcutta Art And Heritage Club and a bistro-style den, Café 1910, will also launch soon.
