With sustainabi­lity as the new clarion call for designers, here are some of the trailblaze­rs.

SREEJITH JEEVAN

Kochi-based Jeevan, of label Rouka, was part of the Usha Silai Project last season at Lakme Fashion Week’s Sustainabi­lity Day. He says that the Usha Silai project questions the process of garment manufactur­ing. “We all get comfortabl­e about a certain way of doing things even though it is probably not the best. It’s only fashion that can afford to and create this kind of change,” he adds.

SHANI HIMANSHU

At CellDsgn 11:11. they use indigo and have been working with local craftsmen in Gujarat on kala cotton. They make sustainabl­e and ecofriendl­y denim that are manufactur­ed using 100 per cent organic cotton that does not use bleach.

RAJESH PRATAP SINGH

This veteran designer has collaborat­ed with Tencel, which is the world’s most eco-friendly fabric for his collection at the Lakme Fashion Week, which is his vision of sustainabl­e fashion.

RINA SINGH

Eka by Rina Singh is another label that works with the idea of sustainabi­lity and her latest collection at Lakmé Fashion Week Winter/Festive 2018 was all about functional and timeless garments in hand woven fabrics where she used khadi and linen.

ANAVILA SIDHU MISHRA

She started with linen saris woven in Bengal and has now become one of the torch bearers for sustainabi­lity in India. Her weavers are from a small hamlet in Bengal, which is not an accessible area. “It is all about creating new textures; you mix things,” she says.
