THE HIGH TABLE

Their plates have graced the tables of maharajas and British royalty. We take a tour of Thomas Goode’s first outlet in India.

- By ADITI PAI

Thomas Goode, the brand that has created bespoke tableware for the British royal family, kings and queens in Europe, Indian maharajas, rock stars and fashion icons, has now arrived in Mumbai. The brand turned its attention to India in 1920, designing customised creations for the Maharajas of Bikaner and Baroda, and even presented a crested plate to the Maharaja of Kotah Umed Singh II. Its first ever store outside of London in its 192 year-long history, is at The Oberoi Hotel, mUMBAI, and has a museum section that showcases plates commissioned for royalty. The collection has five ranges of tableware products from brands such as Hermes, Dome and Baccarat and Thomas Goode’s own designs including the legendary range of Florette and Green Gardland. Johnny Sandelson, Chairman of Thomas Goode, discusses the iconic brand and its plans for India.

Why pick Mumbai?

There is the nostalgic connection between India and England and an extraordinary emotional tie because we have had a number of customers shopping with us from here. For the first time in almost 200 years, we have stepped out and consciously chosen India as the first market. For us, India is a modern day market of growth and strength.

Best selling designs?

Florette (with a 24-carat gold detail) and Green Garland have been the brand’s best selling designs. Both patterns have been supplied to the British royal households. We also have a contemporary Ganesha which is available in 14 different colours, in six sizes and is made of hand produced glass.

What does the museum showcase? It celebrates designs and private commissions, and has a 150-year history. We have some designs of plates commissioned for the Maharajas of Bikaner and Baroda.
