Brothers Rohan Mukul and Rohit Mukul of Karnalbased Zee Laboratories Limited, a key player in the national pharmaceutical industry since 1993 reputed for its anti-cancer medications, and also cosmetics serve as second generation executive directors at the family-run pharmaceutical corporation. “Both of us have been exposed to the company in different ways, and are aware of the responsibility we have,” says elder brother Rohan. Joining the company immediately after his postgraduation in October 2016, Rohan holds a graduate degree in micro-biotechnology from the University of Nottingham and a post-graduate degree in marketing from the University of Westminster. He heads international operations for the company and in the near future hopes to see their cosmetics range doing well in India.

Younger brother Rohit is a law graduate from the University of Southampton and did his MSc from the London School of Economics in October 2018. “While Rohan joined the company and saw the different aspects of the business after he was done with his education, I have always been exposed to the company, partly because even as a child I would accompany my father to wherever he would go for work,” says Rohit. Looking after domestic marketing operations for the company, Rohit also oversees production and corporate management at Zee Laboratories.

As well-educated youngsters, joining the family business may not have been an easy choice, but they are both quick to dissipate the assumption, as Rohan says, “We have always had our own independence when it came to our education and careers. Our parents stressed on a fine education, but never hounded either of us to score top-of-the-class grades. I wish to pursue a PhD and there is complete support from my family.”

Clear with their visions for the company, the brothers announce, almost in unison that Zee Laboratories aspires to achieve two major targets. “Broadly speaking, the ultimate goal is to help bring affordable and quality medicine and healthcare to every citizen of India. From a numbers perspective, we have surpassed the turnover figure of 400 crores this year and have set our sights on a chase of 1000 crores in turnover for the year 2022,” says Rohit.

As per their respective inputs to the business, one of the most significant contributions that the brothers have made is centralising control and changing the outlook towards a revenue-driven approach for the business. “It was very important to have tangible, quantifiable targets in place that can be achieved by the company," he says.
