A Heady Mix

Mix it up with the trendiest ingredients in cocktails today

- By MANOJ SINGH

Shaken or stirred, it’s tough to ignore those colourful concoctions served in delightful stemware with surprising garnishes. As trends go, cocktails are in and gin cocktails are the cherry on the swizzle stick. However, gin cocktails may be in vogue, but it’s the ones that have been created using gins from craft distillers such as Malphy’s, Bathtub and Gin Mare that are top of the barrel. The versatility of gin that allows flavours to blend in smoothly, has contributed to its popularity. What’s more, seasonal ingredients throw in just that element of freshness and colour to align with the merry vibe of any evening given over to the flow of soul. The Mango Spritz (Cirrus 9) is our unique take on the classic Aperol Spritz using mango juice and basil leaves; simple yet refreshing. The use of native ingredients is a popular trend all over the globe, especially in the case of themed evenings. The use of spices, leafs, flowers and the like can truly bring out the essence of a theme. Sometimes the drink can be more about the occasion than the drink itself. Having said that, clinking champagne glasses to raise a toast can be made even more fun when the champagne flutes are served with an element of theatre. For instance, glasses can be served with colourful berries on skewers. James Bond may have preferred his martini with a vodka, but you can flash your own licence to thrill and use gin instead. After all, Gin & Tonic selections are rising as one of the most preferred DIY drinks at social gatherings. Whatever your poison, seep, stir and sip.
