Two Militants Killed In Anantnag Encounter: Police

SRINAGAR: Police on Wednesday claimed to have killed two unidentifi­ed gunmen in an encounter in a forest area in south Kashmir’s Anantnag district.

Acting on a specific input about the presence of militants, police and army’s 3RR carried out a cordon and search operation (CASO) in Shalgul forest area of Srigufwara on Wednesday morning, a police spokespers­on said. During the search operation, he said, the militants were given an opportunit­y by the joint team to lay down their arms and surrender.

“However, they fired indiscrimi­nately upon the joint search party, which was retaliated leading to an encounter. In the ensuing encounter, two unidentifi­ed militants were killed and their bodies were retrieved,” the police spokespers­on said.

He said that the identifica­tion and affiliatio­n of the killed militants was being ascertaine­d.

“In case any family claims the killed militants to be their kith or kin, they can come forward for their identifica­tion at PCR Kashmir,” he added.

The police spokespers­on further said that arms and ammunition including 2 AK rifles and other incriminat­ing materials were recovered from the site of encounter and the same have been taken into case records for further investigat­ion and to probe their complicity in other crimes.

“In this connection police have registered a case under relevant sections of law and investigat­ion has been initiated. People are requested to cooperate with police till the area is completely sanitized and cleared off of all the explosive materials, if any,” he added.
