Two Militants Killed In Anantnag Encounter: Police

SRINAGAR: Police on Wednesday claimed to have killed two unidentified gunmen in an encounter in a forest area in south Kashmir’s Anantnag district.

Acting on a specific input about the presence of militants, police and army’s 3RR carried out a cordon and search operation (CASO) in Shalgul forest area of Srigufwara on Wednesday morning, a police spokesperson said. During the search operation, he said, the militants were given an opportunity by the joint team to lay down their arms and surrender.

“However, they fired indiscriminately upon the joint search party, which was retaliated leading to an encounter. In the ensuing encounter, two unidentified militants were killed and their bodies were retrieved,” the police spokesperson said.

He said that the identification and affiliation of the killed militants was being ascertained.

“In case any family claims the killed militants to be their kith or kin, they can come forward for their identification at PCR Kashmir,” he added.

The police spokesperson further said that arms and ammunition including 2 AK rifles and other incriminating materials were recovered from the site of encounter and the same have been taken into case records for further investigation and to probe their complicity in other crimes.

“In this connection police have registered a case under relevant sections of law and investigation has been initiated. People are requested to cooperate with police till the area is completely sanitized and cleared off of all the explosive materials, if any,” he added.
