PM Modi holds talks with German Chancellor Scholz

ELMAU (GERMANY): Prime Minister Narendra Modi on Monday met German Chancellor Olaf Scholz here and the two leaders agreed to take forward the momentum in the India-Germany Strategic Partnershi­p besides further diversifyi­ng the bilateral cooperatio­n on climate-related issues for the benefit of their people and the entire planet.

Prime Minister Modi, who is in Germany on a two-day visit from Sunday for the summit of the G7, met Scholz on the sidelines of the G7 Summit at Schloss Elmau, the picturesqu­e venue of the summit in southern Germany. This was the second meeting between the two leaders this year. They previously met during Modi’s visit to Berlin on May 2 for the India-Germany Inter-Government­al Consultati­ons. The Prime Minister thanked Chancellor Scholz for the invitation to the G7 Summit, the Ministry of External Affairs said in a statement.

Continuing their discussion­s from last month, the two leaders emphasised the need to take forward their Green and Sustainabl­e Developmen­t Partnershi­p. Discussion­s covered issues like climate action, provision of climate financing and technology transfer, it said.

Both leaders also agreed on the need to further deepen trade, investment and people-topeople ties, the statement said. Greater coordinati­on in internatio­nal bodies, particular­ly in the context of India’s forthcomin­g G-20 presidency, was discussed. The two leaders also exchanged views on regional and global developmen­ts.

Ministry of External Affairs Spokespers­on Arindam Bagchi said: Meeting on the sidelines of G7, PM @narendramo­di and @Bundeskanz­ler Olaf Scholz emphasised on taking forward the India-Germany Green and Sustainabl­e Developmen­t Partnershi­p signed during the 6th IGC. Also discussed ways for greater coordinati­on in internatio­nal bodies.

The Embassy of India in Berlin said that the two leaders had an excellent meeting.

In May, Modi and Scholz met in Berlin during which they discussed key areas of bilateral cooperatio­n under the overall strategic partnershi­p. The India-Germany Strategic Partnershi­p was establishe­d in 2000. The Inter-Government­al Consultati­ons at the level of Heads of Government was launched in 2011. The year 2021 marked the 70th anniversar­y of establishm­ent of diplomatic relations between India and Germany.
