KOLKATA: Tension spread at the National Institute of Technology (NIT) in Durgapur on Sunday after a student died an unnatural death. After the incident, other students started protesting against the Director alleging deliberate negligence and he was reportedly pushed out of the campus.

Later, Director of NIT, Arvind Choubey reportedly resigned. According to sources, the deceased identified as Arpan Ghosh from

Debanandapur in Bandel of Hooghly district was a second year student of Mechanical Engineering department. On Sunday, an examination was scheduled. Before entering the examination centre, he called his mother.

After the exam, Arpan called his father and reportedly said that his performance was not as good as he felt. After he reached the hostel, went to his room. When his friends returned, they found Arpan hanging from the ceiling. Immediately he was brought down and rushed to the NIT health centre. It is alleged despite Arpan being alive when he was rushed to the health centre, no doctor or any medical staff attended him citing that his identity card needed to be produced. When his identity card was brought from the hostel, a doctor checked Arpan and reportedly suggested he be admitted to a hospital. The ambulance of the NIT was called but it allegedly arrived late and moreover, it had no oxygen support. When Arpan was taken to a private hospital, he was reportedly declared dead on arrival. As soon as the news of Arpan’s death reached the NIT campus, students started agitating against the director.

Students reportedly got involved in a scuffle with the concerned authorities and allegedly pushed the Director out of the institute gate. To control the situation a large contingent of police force was deployed. An unnatural death case has been registered. Cops are waiting for the autopsy report.
