Burrabazar: Fire breaks out at plastic godown

-

A major fire broke out at a plastic godown in Burrabazar early on Monday morning. Apart from the godown, the fire spread to three more houses adjacent to it. However, no one was injured in the incident.

About 15 fire tenders doused the flames after almost eight hours. State Fire and Emergency Services minister Sujit Bose went to the spot and took stock of the situation. He said: “The cause of fire can only be ascertained after an inquiry. Also, a probe will be initiated to find out whether the godown was equipped with a fire fighting management system and whether the documents were in order.”

According to sources, around 5 am on Monday, fire broke out at a plastic godown located at 7A, Gobinda Dhar Lane near Nakhoda Mosque. Local residents came out of their homes and informed police along with the fire brigade. Initially, seven fire tenders were pressed into action but later eight more fire tenders were added to the fleet in phases. As the area was very congested and lanes were narrow, fire fighters faced immense problems while dousing the flames. Around 8 am, the blaze was brought under control. However, the flames were doused completely around 1 pm. Local people reportedly alleged that the godown was running illegally.

Meanwhile, BJP leader and saffron party candidate from Kolkata North, Tapas Roy went to the spot. After his arrival, a section of Trinamool Congress workers and BJP workers got involved in an altercation. Firhad Hakim, Mayor of Kolkata said: “Our primary aim is to provide relief support to the affected people. Police will probe as to whether the owner had obtained the fire license and followed the fire safety norms or not.”
