Have no faith in JNU admin, police: Missing student’s mother

- OUR CORRESPONDENT

NEW DELHI: The mother of missing JNU student Najeeb Ahmed is anguished on political mudslinging on the issue of disappearance of his son and appealed all to make sincere efforts for his safe recovery.

“These 13 days have not been easy for me and for my family. I just want my son back. I also want that people who attacked him on October 14 must be punished,” said Najeeb’s mother, Fatima Nafees. His sister Sadaf said: “There was a deliberate attempt to malign the image of his brother and brand him as communal. He was a Science student who was interested in doing well for himself. Having joined in August, he was also new to the campus and to accuse him of getting in violence early on is a ploy to malign his image,”.

In his statement, the JNUSU President Mohit Pandey mentioned that the Vice-chancellor tried to stop the family from interacting with media, however, as there were lot of wrong narratives being spread about the character of Najeeb Ahmed and the insensitive treatment by the JNU administration of his family members, it was important that they must provide the right narrative.

“We have no faith in the university administration and the police investigation so far as the varsity officials are spreading ‘misinformation’ and shielding the ‘culprits’. Those who has been named as assaulters are roaming freely. They have not even been questioned,” she said as she broke down.

Slamming the V-C and the committee report, Pandey said: “Even as ABVP student members are involved in physically assaulting Najeeb, no action is still being taken against them. Vikrant, Ankit and Sunil were seen by the witnesses physically assaulting Najeeb.” In mentioning that Delhi Police were not carrying the investigation process properly, Pandey highlighted that the Delhi Police must also search the large forested area of JNU to trace Najeeb rather than tracking him in Dargahs. NEW DELHI: The owner of the cracker shop in Sadar Bazar, whose employee died in the cracker blast in Naya Bazar area, has been arrested from Meerut, police said on Thursday.

The accused, identified as Mukhtar Ahmed (50), was absconding after Motalip Mirza, who was carrying two packets of crackers from Ahmed’s godown in Gali Zakaria Mohalla Fatak Hawas Khana to one of his shops was killed in the cracker burst, police said.

“He (Ahmed) was absconding after the incident on October 25 and was hiding in Meerut at his relatives’ place. He was arrested today from there,” said Dcp(north) Madhur Verma.

Ahmed had switched off his mobile phone and was using a relative’s phone to communicate with people, said the officer.

Ahmed owns three shops in Sadar Bazar area. He had made the bundles from his godown which contained the ring caps and had first asked one of his employees Anzarul to take them to his shop but after Anzarul said he was busy, he asked Mirza to take them to one of his shops. Mirza was killed when the packets containing crackers had burst in the Naya Bazar area setting off panic in the area with initial reports suggesting a terror angle to the cracker blast.

Later, police ruled out a terror angle to the blast and said that the blast happened due to high pressure and the huge quantity of crackers.
