NEW DELHI: The Delhi Commission for Women (DCW) has approached the Delhi high court for constituting a high-level committee in order to ensure women safety in the national Capital.

The move by the DCW to go to High Court comes after yet another brutal incident of a rape and attempt to murder on a three-and-a-half-year old girl child at Sarai Rohilla area.

The incident followed a day after the rape and murder of a four-year-old girl child by a 25-year-old youth in Keshavpuram area.

The DCW has recommended the high-level committee should consist of the Union Home Minister, Delhi Chief Minister, Lieutenant Governor, Delhi Police Commissioner and the DCW Chief. Once formed, this committee will take major decisions on the steps towards women security in the city and monitor them continuously.

DCW chief Swati Maliwal added that the formation of the committee and making DCW an important party in this committee, will ensure in bringing to light major issues which affect the security and welfare of women in Delhi.

Some of the major issues as highlighted by Maliwal were the enhancement of compensation under the Delhi Victim Compensation scheme, improvement of forensic test facilities, formation of fast track courts for rape cases for faster trials, proper lighting of dark spots in the city and 33 per cent reservation for women in Delhi Police.

In mentioning that she was fed up in requesting the politicians for the formation of the Committee, Maliwal said: “For more than a year the DCW has been approaching politicians for the formation of this commitee, however, it has been of no use. Now, out of compulsion, we have moved the court so that something can be done towards ensuring the safety of women and children of Delhi.”
