ONE DEAD, THREE SERIOUSLY INJURED IN YAMUNA E-WAY ACCIDENT

- RAHUL SINGH

GREATER NOIDA: A blanket of dense fog on the Yamuna Expressway resulted in the collision of around half a dozen vehicles into each other in Mathura, leaving one dead and 3 seriously injured, police said. The incident occurred near Surer, Mathura, which is situated at 81 km milestone from Noida. Every year, there are several accidents witnessed on the Yamuna Expressway due to low visibility caused by heavy fog.

“The incident took place at around 1 am in the night. The driver of a Volvo bus suddenly applied brakes causing the vehicles coming from behind to crash into one another. More than half a dozen vehicles got rammed into each other. A CNG bus got hit by a fast moving truck from behind causing death of a person sitting on the back seat of the bus. The deceased has been identified as Sumit Narayan from Nand Nagri, Delhi, who was returning from Etawah,” said Neeraj Kumar, sub-inspector, Sureer police station.

“Three men were critically injured who were rushed to the nearby hospitals of Agra and Mathura and are now stable. This area usually witnesses frequent accidents which may be due to its location, which is situated in the middle of the 165 kms long highway,” he added.

Due to the accident, several vehicles were stranded at the Expressway causing huge traffic jam.

However, with the police and Expressway officials addressing the situation with urgency, the vehicles were removed with the help of a crane. The visibility was reduced to less than 50 meters in the region.

Dense fog has aggravated the prevailing pollution problem in the NCR.

The low wind speed increased the density of the suspended particles in the air. Several trains are reported running late as the NCR region is enveloped with a dense layer of fog with the increased number of suspended particles in the air. According to Meteorological officials, the current fog and smog situation may continue to prevail for the next few days.
