NEW DELHI: In the backdrop of the agitation by sanitation workers of EDMC, Delhi Chief Secretary on Wednesday held a meeting of the commissioners of the three municipal corporations to discuss the financial situation of the civic bodies.

“All three commissioners — PK Gupta (NDMC), P K Goel (SDMC) and Mohanjeet Singh (EDMC) attended the meet called by Chief Secretary M M Kutty,” a senior official said adding that meeting lasted for about an hour.

The erstwhile Municipal Corporation of Delhi (MCD) was trifurcated in 2012 into North, South and East Corporations (North MCD, SDMC and EDMC).

Sources said, the financial situation of the three civic bodies were discussed in the meeting.

“The Chief Secretary wanted to know about the financial deficiencies in the civic bodies. And, so, basically it was an assessment of the financial situation,” the source said. The meeting assumes significance as it comes hot on the heels of the agitation by sanitation workers of the East Delhi Municipal Corporation over salary and arrears issues.

The strike began on January 5 and the ensuing garbage crisis left a trail of garbage in the Trans-yamuna region of the city. The EDMC had on Tuesday claimed that all unions had ended the agitation, however, the MCD Swachhata Karmchari Union, affiliated to Bhartiya Mazdoor Sangh (BMS), claimed it is still on strike.

North and East Corporations are among the cashstripped civic bodies in the capital city, and have faced intermittent agitation from sanitation workers in last couple of years, South Corporation, on the other hand has managed to stay out of the mess.
