Four arrested for beating cops in a drunken state

NEW DELHI: Four persons who were celebratin­g their friend’s birthday party and were in an inebriated condition had assaulted a constable in South Delhi’s Vasant Kunj police station area. The police have managed to arrest four of them on Wednesday. The constable has still not been discharged from the hospital.

The accused have been identified as Vishal Sharma, Navjyot Sehrawat, Harish Lohia and Yatin Norang; all residents of South Delhi. According to police, Constable Mohd Alam was on picket duty along with constables Prithwiraj and Sushil at Masudpur near Malik Hotel.

On January 10, at around 11 pm, the accused who were driving rashly, came near the picket and was about to ram into the barricades but the accident was averted, he said.

The constables objected about the car being driven at high speed and warned the driver who was also accompanie­d by others, cops added.

They attacked Constable Alam, who sustained injuries on his left knee while the other two constables were verbally abused by the men, who were in an inebriated condition, he said.

Before they could be caught, they fled from the spot. A case was registered under the relevant sections of the IPC at Vasant Kunj South police station.

Several teams had been constitute­d and CCTV footage of the area was procured. The vehicle was traced and it was found that the car belonged to Navjot. The police later managed to trace their location, and they were apprehende­d.

During their questionin­g, they had revealed that on the day of the incident, they were celebratin­g their friend Anish’s birthday party and had confessed that they assaulted the policeman. Constable Alam is undergoing treatment in a local hospital and is recovering from his knee injury.
