Cops show honesty, deposit bag full of new notes at police stn

- ANAND MOHAN J

NEW DELHI: Two months after the cash crunch hit the country, many citizens were left scurrying for the new notes. The situation was desperate enough as many had tried to get the new notes by standing in queues or in some cases by contacting their friends in reputed banks and withdrew the money, before they were arrested.

But despite that, two Head Constables from the Shahdra district displayed honesty when they returned Rs 12 lakh in new currency notes that they found lying unattended near Pushta Road in Shahdra District.

The incident was reported on Thursday, when Head Constable Manmohan and Head Constable Sanjeev were on patrolling duty. “The constables were on their patrolling duty and were passing through Mandir lane when they spotted a bag lying unattended. They acted immediately as a part of the Republic Day patrolling, they were on high alert,” said Deputy Commissioner of Police (Shahdra), Nupur Prasad.

The policemen had tried to see if there was anyone who was around the area but when they could not find anyone, they decided to open it. When HC Manmohan opened the bag, he was in for a shock as he found the newly-introduced Rs 2,000 notes amounting to Rs 12 lakh.

Without wasting time, they handed over the bag to Gandhi Nagar police station. The senior officers were so impressed by their integrity and honesty, that they have forwarded their names for a reward. “I feel really happy. Everyone is pleased with our work,” said HC Manmohan.

The Delhi Police’s image had taken a beating as a month ago the SHO of Jahangirpuri police station and four of his subordinates were suspended after they pocketed Rs 25 lakh from a garbage collector. But the Head Constable’s integrity would go a long way to rectify that image.

“They have set an example for the force and have proved that not every policeman is the same,” said a senior police official.
