NEW DELHI: The Delhi Police Crime Branch unit has so far remained tight-lipped about the missing JNU student Najeeb’s case after one person was arrested from Maharganj, UP, for making ransom calls demanding Rs 20 lakh for the missing student. However, Najeeb’s family has revealed that they had been receiving such calls for the past few days.

The family had initially started getting text messages by several phone numbers wherein the user had started asking them about Najeeb’s whereabouts. “This person was persistently messaging us. He wanted to ask us about the whereabouts of Najeeb. He told us that he wanted to know about him and how he was doing,” said a relative.

When the relative chose to confront the unidentified man, he finally told them, “I have Najeeb. If you want to see him give me Rs 20 lakh,” the relative said. The family had approached the Crime Branch with the development. The police had told the family to keep the alleged kidnappers busy and the family started to negotiate the ransom amount.

“We told them that we do not have that kind of money. Then, we finally managed to strike a deal at Rs 15 lakh. We had been receiving calls and messages from various numbers for the past few days. I do not know if the people are being serious or they decided to poke fun at our condition,” the relative added.

The Delhi Police is currently interrogating the accused Shameem to find out if he knows anything about the missing student or was trying to make a prank call. It has been more than three months since the JNU student has been missing, and the family is not happy with the way the police are conducting the investigations.
