Sandakan bamboozles South Africa batsmen in second T20 as SL seals first win on tour

-

JOHANNESBURG: Leftarm wrist-spinner Lakshan Sandakan bamboozled South Africa's batsmen as Sri Lanka made a strong start in the second Twenty20 international on Sunday in Johannesburg.

The diminutive Sandakan took four for 23 as South Africa were bowled out for 113 in 19.3 overs.

Making his T20 international debut – although he has played in three Test matches and a one-day international – Sandakan confused the batsmen with his ability to turn the ball both ways on an unusually dry and slow Wanderers Stadium pitch.

Seamers Isuru Udana and Nuwan Kulasekera took three for 13 and two for 10 respectively.

Sandakan took a wicket with his first ball, although it was a rank long hop which would have been called wide if Mangaliso Mosehle had not stretched to edge it to wicketkeeper Dinesh Chandimal.

He had top scorer Heino Kuhn smartly stumped by Chandimal for 29 and then dismissed left-handers Wayne Parnell and Andile Phehlukwayo, both trying to reversesweep him, in the space of three balls.

At that stage South Africa were 74 for seven after 12 overs.

Captain Farhaan Behardien and Aaron Phangiso added 33 for the eighth wicket to give the total some respectability for the hosts.

No fewer than three bowlers took wickets with their first deliveries of the match – Sandakan, left-arm seamer Udana and off-spinner Dhananjaya de Silva. Like Sandakan, Udana was playing in his first match of the series.

South Africa lead the three-match series 1-0 after winning by 17 runs in a match reduced to 10 overs a side in Centurion on Friday.
