SPEEDING BMW HITS CAB, KILLS DRIVER

NEW DELHI: A speeding BMW car hit an Uber cab from behind killing the driver of the Wagon R in a severe accident that happened in Vasant Vihar on Sunday night. The 24-yearold accused initially fled from the spot but was later arrested by the Delhi Police.

The fatal incident happened at around 11.30 pm on Sunday night when the Uber cab driver Nazrul Islam was on a booking call from a passenger. He was searching the passenger near the IIT Hostel bus flyover when the black colour speeding BMW hit the Wagon R from behind. The impact of the collision was strong that the Wagon R was thrown into the air for some time and skid for at least 50 metre before coming to a halt. Nazrul Islam (28), suffered severe dead injuries and was rushed to the AIIMS Trauma Center but could not be saved.

“The driver of the BMW fled from the spot leaving behind injured Nazrul. Had he taken him to the hospital, his life could have been saved,” said Moinur Rehman, a cab driver.

Nazrul was from Dakshin Dinajpur district of West Bengal. Though he resided in Delhi for several years but has taken a break and has returned again to Delhi a year back and has joined Uber as a cab driver.

“I want severe punishment for the accused. My husband was the only hope for us. How am I going to take care of my children now?” said an inconsolab­le Nazrul’s wife.

“Nazrul was the lone bread winner of his family. He has a three-year-old son and a oneyear-old daughter. We are worried about the future of his wife and children,” said Mohammad Azam, Nazrul’s uncle.

The police later handed over the body to the deceased after the post-mortem.

Immediatel­y, several teams were formed by the South district police to nab the accused driver of the BMW which had a Chandigarh number.

Later in the day, the cops arrested the accused who was identified as 24-year-old Shoib Kohli, a resident of Panchsheel in South Delhi. His father is a retired employee of Max hospital.

“We have arrested the accused Shoib Kohli under IPC Section 279 and 304 (A). Shoib works as a food analyst in a food concept company based in Gurugram. Further investigat­ion is on,” said Additional DCP (South) Chinmoy Biswal.
