Candidates in reserved categories to get long-pending teaching posts in DU

NEW DELHI: Delhi University will soon clear the existing backlogs to provide candidates in the reserved categories their rightful due and appoint them to the reserved teaching posts which had been vacant from nearly the past 3 years.

The Registrar of Delhi University on Saturday invited online application forms from eligible candidates for appointments to the post of Assistant Professor in various departments of the University.

According to sources, in the last three years, there were 911 vacant posts in different departments of the University, which were reserved for the candidate in the reserved sections, which includes ST, SC, OBC and PWD.

Of the 911 posts, 378 posts are to be filled up by Assistant Professors. The remaining are to be filled up by Associate Professors and Professors.

In a Parliamentary Committee sitting in connection with the SC/ST Welfare on December 14, last year, the Chairman of University Grants Commission (UGC), Principals of Aryabhatt College and Deen Dayal Upadhyay College failed to appear before the Committee to depose their views on the opportunity denied to candidates in the SC and ST categories.

Later, the authorities were told to re-frame the reservation roster and fill up the remaining identified backlog of vacancies.

“It has been three years since this practice has been in continuation. No one from the weaker sections of the society has been provided with their quota to work in the University”, said a University official.

“None of the candidate from the ST, SC and OBC categories has been given the opportunity to take a step forward”, the official added.

Despite several complaints by some candidate to the ST/SC Cell and OBC Cell, no action was taken to provide them their reserved vacancies.

According to Government of India, the Reservation Policy instructs every institute to reserve posts for 15 per cent of Schedules Castes (SC) candidates, 27 per cent of Other Backward Classes (OBC) candidates, 7.5 per cent of Schedules Tribes (ST) candidates and 3 per cent of Persons with Disabilities (PWD) candidates for seeking jobs.

The UGC and the Parliamentary Committee on January 12 had issued notices to the University, concerned colleges, other grant-in-aid-institutions and the Centre to check the Reservation Policy for candidates in the SC, ST, OBC and PWD categories in teaching and non-teaching posts, as well as admission to all level courses in the University and Colleges and frame a proper report keeping a track of the backlogs and submit the reports latest by January 17.
