With the introduction of the app, students will no longer be able to get by with fake attendance; it will be compulsory for them to attend classes

NEW DELHI: Delhi University is all set to go online by introducing a mobile app to help teachers keep a tab on daily class strength and show the percentage of attendance to help them inform the students about the shortage in advance.

The mobile application was being worked upon since last year by a committee of seven members, set up by the University to ensure accountability and transparency.

“The project has been going on for around six months now and the app is expected to be launched next month. This will help teachers keep a tab on the attendance of the students in their daily class and also inform the students in advance in case they fall short on attendance “, a senior DU official said.

Earlier, some colleges namely Hindu College, Zakir Hussain College, Miranda House and IP College for Women, used to update the attendance on their websites on a monthly-basis. The remaining colleges, meanwhile, had a manual system to maintain the attendance of students.

With the introduction of the app, students will no longer be able to get by with fake attendance, also known as proxy. It will be compulsory for them to attend classes to gain attendance.

After the app is launched, teachers will update the attendance on the app on a dailybasis. Attendance data is very crucial for students, especially at the time of issuance of admit cards for examinations.

“Students always come up with complaints that teachers have not maintained accurate attendance sheets,” the University official said.

After testing on a pilot basis for a few years, the University last year made online the process of undergraduate admissions and also opted for digitisation of the mark sheets.

The mobile app will boost the University’s tech-savvy approach. The application will be a centralised app for all departments and faculty members of 68 colleges affiliated to the University.
