- RAHUL SINGH

NOIDA: A 16-year-old girl killed herself after she was scolded by her brother for falling in love with a married man. The body of the girl was found hanging from a tree at Sector-25 in Jal Vayu Vihar on Sunday morning, said police officials.

“We got the information at around 5 am that a woman’s body was hanging from a tree in M-block of Jal Vayu Vihar. The body was found hanging at a height of around 30 ft from the ground with a neem tree. The girl hanged herself with a scarf. We have retrieved the body and sent it for post-mortem,” said Anil Pratap Singh, SHO, Sector-20 Police Station, Noida.

“After further investigation, we identified the girl as Savita Mandal, a resident of Sector-9 slums. She belonged to Malda district of West Bengal. Savita was in love with a married man and was depressed over being scolded by her brother on Saturday evening.

She went missing soon after brother scolded her and committed suicide due to depression. We are investigating the matter. As of now, no FIR has been registered against anyone,” added Singh.

On questioning the security supervisor of Sector-25 as to how the girl climbed the tree without anyone noticing her, the supervisor said: “The girl was not one of the house maids or a worker at the society. Our duty is at the gate only. We can’t look after every nook and corner of the sector.”

This callousness poses a threat to the safety of residents and vehicles inside the area as there is no one looking after them. Eight years ago, the infamous Arushi Talwar murder case took place in the L-block of the same sector. Now, the suicide of the girl raises questions over the security of the Air Force Officers’ quarters, Jalvayu Vihar.
