Gambling racket busted in Shahdara, one arrested

NEW DELHI: In yet another case, an illegal casino operating out of a house in Shahdara district was busted by the Delhi Police. One person, Sameer has been arrested and Rs 2,421 in cash, one casino stock used for gambling and 34 quarters of illicit liquor were recovered from the house.

According to Deputy Commission­er of Police (Shahdara), Nupur Prasad, the case had come to light when they had received informatio­n that an illegal casino was operating out of house in Old Seelampur. A team was constitute­d to investigat­e the case.

Two constables had acted as decoy customers and paid Rs 400 for a ten time turnover and also paid Rs 100 for illicit liquor. When the exchange took place, the accused were arrested. Sameer informed the police during his interrogat­ion that he was the caretaker of the casino and had offered attractive offers to make people gamble in the casino. The owner of the casino, Akash is absconding. NEW DELHI: A 25-year-old witness in a murder case was shot at in Outer Delhi’s Sultanpuri area on Monday night.

The victim has been identified as Sidharth Sharma, the main eyewitness in the murder of a woman, who was killed in March 2016 in Mongolpuri area. His condition is said to be critical as he is undergoing treatment at a local hospital.

According to a senior police official, Sharma was being under constant pressure to withdraw his statement. But he had refused to do so and had also gone to the local court in Rohini on Monday morning. When he had returned from the court, he was shot that very same day outside his house in Krishan Nagar.

“Sharma was the main witness along with another person in the murder case. The case was registered based on their statements. After that Sharma was being constantly threatened to withdraw the complaint,” the officer said.

Police said that based on the CCTV footages of the area and questionin­g of the locals, the accused persons were identified and raids were conducted at their possible hideouts. Some suspects were finally detained on Tuesday.

“We have detained some persons related to this case and their questionin­g is currently going on. Arrests will be made soon. Meanwhile, Sharma is still in the hospital,” said Deputy Commission­er of Police (Outer) Rishi Pal.

Sharma was his family’s sole bread winner. He lives with his mother in Krishna Vihar. His father died ten years ago.
